Slovenia Business Week no. 17/2005: Hungarian President Meets Businessmen

President Madl told managers that the governments has an important role to perform in boosting economic cooperation, in particular between small and mid-sized enterprises in particular

Hungarian President Ferenc Madl met businessmen from Slovenia and Hungary at the end of his two-day visit to Slovenia on Wednesday, 20 April.. He told managers in Lendava, northeastern Slovenia, near the border with Hungary, that the governments has an important role to perform in boosting economic cooperation, in particular between small and mid-sized enterprises in particular.

Madl also highlighted the great opportunity that EU membership of Slovenia and Hungary offers to the bordering regions. It is important that they develop economic potential so that they retain people, he said, and underlined the competitive advantage of multiculturality in such regions.

The businessmen attending the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Slovenia (CCIS) conference pointed to inadequate joint investments, which amount to merely US$ 15m. The Hungarian managers noted that they invested US$ 750m in Croatia last year.

Madl as well as the managers also stressed the importance of constructing motorway and highway links between the two countries in order to facilitate investment. EU funds for cross-border cooperation should also be used, they said.

Bilateral trade has been growing to the tune of 10 percent a year, and topped EUR 722m last year. The businessmen said, though, that there is still ample scope for improvements.
