MIP and Perutnina Ptuj, two of the country's largest meat-processing companies, on Wednesday, 8 June signed an agreement setting up a consortium that will coordinate activities and standards for the breeding of pigs used for the production of dry-cured ham with Slovenian geographical origin.

This agreement joins the potentials of both companies in certain segments of business, and represents a step towards a better identity of Slovenian food, said Roman Glazer, the chairman of Perutnina Ptuj.

According to Glazer, the agreement specifies the technological and marketing principles of cooperation, but it does not represent any form of joint venture or partnership.

The signing follows a year of preparations which included a test selection of pigs and supply of a Slovenian breed of pigs that Perutnina Ptuj grows for MIP, one of the largest and most famous producers of dry-cured ham in the country.

According to both companies, dry-cured ham also known as prosciutto with a designation of Slovenian geographical origin will be available on the market in the coming days, when the new brand and logo will also be presented.
